Your Interview Prep Cheat Sheet: Keep it Cool, Keep it You!

Hey there! So, you’ve landed an interview (fabulous!), and now you’re pondering the next steps. Don’t fret! I’m here to serve up some straightforward advice to help you ace that interview with poise and a dash of your unique flair. Let’s dive into these easy-to-digest tips, tailored for the recruitment process.

1. Research Thoroughly

Before you do anything else, make sure you’re clued up about the company. Dive into their website, scour recent news releases, and peruse their social media feeds. Familiarise yourself with their culture, values, and notable achievements. This knowledge isn’t just to impress (though it certainly will); it’s to ensure this place is a perfect backdrop for your talents and happiness.

2. Practice, But Keep It Genuine

Perfection comes with practice, or at least it prevents you from fumbling over the routine “Tell me about yourself” question. Rope in a mate or chat to a mirror, and rehearse your key points. Yes, those predictable queries about strengths, weaknesses, and your five-year plan are clichéd, but they’re as inevitable as a dodgy handshake. The twist? Answer them in a manner that’s authentically you—no canned responses!

3. Dress Appropriately, Yet Comfortably

Dressing for success is indeed a thing, but that doesn’t mean you should compromise comfort. Opt for attire that suits the company’s environment while making you feel great. If in doubt, business casual generally hits the mark. Remember, if you’re comfortable, you exude confidence!

4. Come Prepared

Bring a copy of your CV, for starters. If relevant, also carry a portfolio or examples of your work. Have a list of questions ready for them (since interviews are a two-way interaction!), and jot down some points or reminders you want to highlight. Arriving a bit early is also wise—aim for 10-15 minutes before your interview to show punctuality without seeming too eager.

5. Relax and Be Yourself

This is crucial. Try to relax. It sounds simple, but remember, the interview is as much about them getting to know you as it is about you sizing them up. They need to like you, but you also need to verify this is the right place for you. Be truthful, engaging, and let your personality shine.

6. Follow Up

A thoughtful follow-up email can make a significant impact. Summarise a key point of the discussion, express your enthusiasm for the role, and thank them for considering you. It’s polite, professional, and keeps you on their radar.

And there you have it! Remember, every interview is a stepping stone to the perfect opportunity. Whether it’s a home run or has a few stumbles, each one is a prep step for that ideal role waiting just for you. So, chin up, smile, and show them what you’re made of!
